Illegally imported used clothing paralyzing domestic garment makers

The Federation of Philippine Industries has urged the government to immediately stop import of used garments and clothing which has adversely impacted the textile industry.
Its effects have led to reduced production capacity while some units have shut down manufacturing completely.
Republic Act 4653 prohibits import of used clothing in to the country, and the Federation expects Government to act tough.
According to Deputy Collector, RA 4653 is an act to safeguard the health of the people and maintain the dignity of the nation by declaring it a national policy to prohibit the commercial import of textile articles commonly known as used clothing and rags through smuggling only to be sold in the domestic market.
Recently, Bureau of Customs agents seized two containers loaded with used clothing.
Deputy Collector denied the allegation there are machinations working to lift the warrant over this seizure and detention.
