Its sheer dedication and spirit that keeps women in their twilight years, doing something for the men in uniform in far away and cold climes.
Yes, troops in Iraq can keep warm, thanks to a liner fixed within the helmets worn by them.
Hardworking and talented Elk Grove Village senior female citizens are members of crocheting and knitting club that make these liners.
Led by a dedicated 85 year old leader and project coordinator Ann Curth, each Wednesday morning members come together and meet at Village Grove Apartments that serves seniors.
They have been despatching helmet liners since July, last, and helping troops fight deadly outdoor chill.
So far, 350 liners have been sent the club is expected to send the figure to 400, adds Curth.
At the end of it, a small note of appreciation for the brave men in Iraq reads:
"I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for all of the hard work your group has done to make us a little more comfortable here; if just being thought of by total strangers isn't enough to keep us warm this winter I'm sure the helmet liners will be. Thanks again for your efforts & your patriotism; if everyone back home shared your spirit and generosity you can bet that our military wouldn't be fighting the recruiting war. Sincerely, MAJ Brennan H."
Ann and her team, however, are running out of yarn and supplies to continue the project.
