“Things have changed a lot ever since we were exposed to global competition. Earlier, we didn't have production in winter. But, now we produce throughout the year. The key is in increasing labour productivity. This will help us face all kinds of competition,” Mr Rathnasamy says.
Another key advantage that India has is the availability of raw material (cotton) and quality yarn.” Bangladesh has got some limitations. They are heavily dependant on India and other major producing countries for cotton and yarn. So, they will not be in a position to make a big difference,” industry players say. Further, Bangladesh cannot compete with India in design capabilities and technology, they point out.
“We will retain the edge in better technology and machinery. They will definitely not be able to dump cheap products in the Indian market,” sources said. But, in value added garments they could make a dent, they add. The industry wants the Centre to improve infrastructure and provide more incentives for the sector to help them face the new challenges.
