Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) demanded clamping a ban on the cotton import till January 31, 2006.
Apart from saving maximum foreign exchange by utilizing local cotton, objective of this demand was to ensure reasonable profits from growers' product.
Speaking to media, Chaudhry Muhammad Azam Waraich, PCGA Chairman, said flawless system was set up to provide actual data of cotton inflow to the ginneries and data supervision committee would be created.
Accepting its mistake, PCGA had issued the correct figures without delay, he said. Chaudhry requested the Textile Ministry to start HVI cotton testing laboratories in all the circles of PCGA with its supervision assigned to PCGA to make laboratories more competent.
He also proposed to set up such laboratories at all cotton stations to change the functioning of cotton trade and to improve the ginning, picking and processing of cotton.
Chaudhry also demanded that any import deal should be registered by the government through State Bank of Pakistan and Ministry of Commerce; moreover, registration number should be allotted to importers besides releasing weekly report.
Ginners and cotton growers would be informed on the situation and market mechanism by cotton import report, said Chaudhry.
