India's Co-optex to open stores in Malaysia, Singapore

The Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers' Co-operative Society, popularly known as Co-optex, will soon open its outlets in Malaysia and Singapore. This was announced by Tamil Nadu's Minister of Handloom and Textiles, Dr. S Sundararaj.

Co-optex is the largest handloom co-operative society in the country and the fabrics and home textiles sold at Co-optex outlets are made by over 400,000 handlooms in Tamil Nadu.

Established in 1935, Co-optex has a long and rich tradition in handlooms. Silk and cotton sarees, churidaar sets and readymade shirts are some of the items that are offered in Co-optex stores across the country.

Co-optex currently has 131 showrooms in India, of which 64 are in the state of Tamil Nadu and the remaining 67 in other states across the country.

Co-optex International, the export arm of Co-optex, has been exporting home textiles to Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, Greece, Hong Kong, UK, South Africa and UAE for many years.

The products exported by Co-optex include bed spreads, table clothes, furnishing fabrics, placemats, napkins, curtains, cushion covers and terry towels.

In 2010-11, Co-optex registered net profit of Rs. 260 million, up 18 percent from the Rs. 220 million earned in 2009-10.
