Mexican labour rights activist Martín Barrios was released from prison unexpectedly on Thursday, after being held for two weeks on false charges of blackmailing a local maquila factory owner.
Local and international groups, including the ITGLWF, mounted pressure against the authorities, the company concerned and the brands that source there.
Barrios, the President of the Mexican Human and Labour Rights Commission, had been assisting workers in defending their rights. During the course of the conflict, the company illegally fired 163 workers who had gone on strike to demand an end to the exploitative conditions they had to endure.
The ITGLWF will continue to support pressure on the company, Calidad en Confecciones, to resolve the outstanding problems.
