Indian govt implements schemes to boost tribal weaving

The Government of India is implementing the following five schemes for development of handlooms and welfare of weavers:

1.         Integrated Handlooms Development Scheme;

2.         Marketing and Export Promotion Scheme;

3.         Handloom Weavers Comprehensive Welfare Scheme;

4.         Mill Gate Price Scheme; and

5.         Diversified Handloom Development Scheme.

Under the Integrated Handlooms Development Scheme and Marketing and Export Promotion Scheme, financial assistance is provided by the Government of India to various agencies for organizing exhibitions, Craftmelas, setting up of Urban Haats, Buyer-Seller Meets etc., which provide a platform for publicizing and marketing of various handloom products, including tribal fabrics and clothing articles.

A separate budget allocation has been made from 2011-12 to provide financial assistance for development and promotion of tribal handlooms. For this purpose, an amount of Rs.6.87 crore was released under various handloom schemes. During 2012-13, budget allocation of Rs.48.75 crore has been made under various handloom schemes.
