Textile Ministry mulls Convention Centre in Mumbai

The Textile Ministry stated that it was awaiting clearance from the Maharashtra government for the International Convention Centre to come up at Mumbai with an approximate investment of Rs 700 crore.

"The Convention Centre would be set up by the Textile Ministry on its own at an approximate investment of Rs 700 crore and the government is still awaiting the clearance from the state," Union Minister of Textile, Shankersinh Vaghela said on the sidelines of `Images Fashion Forum'.

Commenting on the interests shown by the corporates like Reliance and Birla to partner in the coming International Convention Centre, he said: 'The Convention Centre will be set up solely by the Textile Ministery.'

The government will also invest about Rs 300-Rs 400 crore in the 'Haats' planned across the country on the lines the Delhi Haat.

"The government would spend a total sum of Rs 300-Rs 400 crore over a period of one year for the development of Delhi Haat kind of Haats across the country and there would be at least one Haat in each capital of the state," he said. Commenting on the textile export figures, Vaghela said the export touched a total of $36 mn as of September 2005.

About the export for the complete fiscal year, he said: "We are moving ahead according to the $85 mn dollar target kept by CRISIL by 2010".

On the disbursements made till date under the TUFS scheme of the government, Vaghela said till date, Rs 31,000 crore worth of loans have been disbursed under TUFS and loans amounting to Rs 18,000 crore have been disbursed under the UPA government.

The government would also come up with 18 apparel parks in one and a half year under the Integrated Textile Park Scheme.

"Each apparel park, at an estimated investment of Rs 100 crore is expected to employ 15,000 people and government would extend huge subsidy for the parks," he added.
