“They seemed to have heard and understood the legitimate concerns we had for our retail customers as well as our sock industry.”
“Both strong collaboration and understanding were achieved by the full industry and the FTC,” added Hal Martens of Dorlastan Fibers and Chairman of the Global Manufacturers Committee of THA.
Subsequently, the FTC issued a written response yesterday to Representative Sue Myrick (R-NC-9th) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). According to Lydia Parnes, Director of the Bureau, of Consumer Protection, “Specifically, we (FTC) will not be recommending any action against retailers who are selling socks which fail to meet the new labeling requirements at the time of sale, if the socks were received before March 3, 2006, and are correctly labeled under the old requirements.”
Industry was pleased with the response from FTC as it will enable them to assure retailers that product received by the retailer from the manufacturer prior to the March 3 date will not be subject to re-labeling and/or re-stickering. “This effort represented all facets of the hosiery industry, commented Jon Shugart, President and CEO of WY Shugart and Sons and current THA Chairman of the Board.”
“Additionally, it was reinforced by government officials, elected and appointed, who sincerely want to work with us and for the best interests of the industry. Added Kevin M. Burke, President and CEO, American Apparel & Footwear Association based in Arlington, Virginia."
“We welcome the FTC announcement for a balanced enforcement on this new labeling law on socks,” “The FTC decision reflects both the consensus of the industry and the on-going good faith effort by companies to be in compliance."
