The leather exports could be doubled from $2.40 billion to $5.10 billion by 2010 if 12 per cent growth is achieved every year, said Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman, Council of leather exports.
Presently footwear industry growth is 23 per cent and it contributes almost 36 per cent of the exports, said Ahmed, speaking at the leather research industry function.
V Krishnamurthy, Chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council said, compared to the resources that India has, the global market share is marginal.
The industry can effectively contribute to country's economy if problem areas are identified and resolved.
