Animal lovers have protested against the annual international leather fair that began in Chennai, yesterday.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) demonstrated at the venue where the event was inaugurated by Union Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran.
They protested and urged him to take steps to stop torture and rampant killing of innocent animals for leather.
In a letter to Maran, PETA appealed Maran to follow in his father's footstep, who requested states to set up committees to ensure implementation of Prevention of Cruelty Act.
PETA activists have also lamented at the manner in which animals are transported in crowded vehicles that cause injuries resulting at times, in their death.
Further, they added that these animals are slaughtered in full public view violating laws, complained PETA.
