Thailand's exports to Japanese market are targeted to expand 20 percent this year with export earnings at $18.19 billion, compared to last year's $15.16 billion, due to growing Japanese economy and superior quality Thai products, said the Ministry of Commerce.
Director General of the Ministry's Department of Export Promotion, Chantra Purnariksha informed that Thai exports worth $130.29 billion are projected for 2006 registering a 17.5 percent growth.
Mrs. Chantra clarified that Japanese economy is expected to grow by 2.2 percent this year, while Thai product quality backed by prompt shipments will make it a win-win situation for the country.
Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Somkid Jatusripitak helped organize roadshows in Japan meeting Japanese authorities and representatives of the private sector in order to promote high-quality Thai products, she noted.
Japanese importers, including footwear and textile industries, are placing more orders though prices are 10 to 20 percent higher than rival countries, especially China, she said.
Thai exporters should maintain competitiveness through improved quality and innovative designs as well as maintain delivery schedules, suggested the Director General.
