2. Screen 100 percent of all cargo before it arrives in the U.S using intelligence and cutting edge technologies. And, inspects all designated high-risk cargo.

3. 24-Hour Rule: This CBP requirement allows us the ability to screen manifests a day before cargo arrives.

4. C-TPAT (Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism): CBP created a public-private and international partnership with over 7,000 businesses, including most of the largest US importers -- the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT). Under this program, legitimate companies that do regular business with the U.S. have increased their own security to prevent terrorists from infiltrating their shipments. (We check not only the company shipping the goods, but also the companies that provided them with any services.)

5. Use of Technology: CBP is currently utilizing large-scale X-ray and gamma ray machines and radiation detection devices to pre-screen cargo.

CBP information, inspection and surveillance technologies include:

Radiation Portal Monitor: a detection device that provides CBP with a passive, non-intrusive means to screen trucks, cargo containers, rail cars, passenger vehicles, and other conveyances for radiation emanating from nuclear devices, dirty bombs, special nuclear materials, natural sources, and isotopes commonly used in medicine and industry. There are more than 684 installed nationwide with plans for continued expansion.

Personal Radiation Detector: a small, but highly sensitive, device carried by CBP officers at ports of entry and CBP Border Patrol agents at highway checkpoints. It will sound an alarm if radiation is detected during an inspection or enforcement operation. More than 12,499 are carried by CBP officers and agents nationwide.
