Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard received the National Textile Center University Research Consortium Award in Washington D.C., February 2006, said United States House of Representatives.
The award recognizes her leadership in support of the National Textile Center's work on behalf of the fiber, textile, and apparel industries. Los Angeles has the largest concentration of apparel and textile workers in the United States.
"Congresswoman Roybal-Allard has consistently been an advocate for programs that improve the quality of these workers' lives: their health care, educational opportunities, and economic and social well-being," said Susan Kaiser, Professor and Chair, Textiles and Clothing, University of California, Davis.
"She has also worked with colleagues in both parties to protect individuals and communities through homeland security efforts; such efforts are also of great concern to the eight universities that comprise the NTC research consortium. At the University of California, Davis, for example, research supported by NTC is advancing the protective qualities of medical textiles, uniforms for first responders, and military personnel.”
“Research and educational opportunities for students are also fostering the development of new materials that are environmentally friendly, as well as new products and processes that address diverse consumers' needs. Congresswoman Roybal-Allard has helped to make these research and educational activities possible, in a way that never loses sight of the workers who make the clothes we wear."
