United States House of Representative Congressman Solomon P Ortiz' House Armed Services Committee hears witnesses on Dubai takeover of various levels of Port Operations on East, Gulf Coasts.
Congressman Solomon P Ortiz joined 81 of his colleagues in the House of Representative in introducing the bipartisan Foreign Investment Security Improvement Act of 2006, legislation that would ensure Congress' oversight role in the investigation of Dubai Ports (DP) World's acquisition of P&O Worldwide, which has operations at several major US ports, including the Port of Corpus Christi.
Also today, Ortiz' House Armed Services Committee held a hearing to discuss security implications of the Dubai deal. Questioning from the members of the Armed Services Committee indicated members are still unconvinced the port deal is consistent with national security.
"While DP World's request for a 45-day review is a good first step, we want to make sure the Administration understands we demand a serious and thorough investigation," Ortiz said.
"Many of us in Congress are introducing this legislation as leverage to ensure that a real investigation is conducted, and that all protections normally instituted for foreign acquisitions are included in the deal. Al Qaida began the war here on our homeland; we must be vigilant that it does not happen again. Assuring the security of our nation's ports should be a top national security priority."
