Committee on Ways and Means of US House of Representatives approved H.R. 1053, to authorize the extension of permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) treatment to the products of Ukraine, by a vote of 417 – 2, with three Members voting 'present.'

"This is an exciting time in which we recognize the continuing maturation and evolvement of a new nation – a nation of people who have deserved better over many decades and are now beginning to see the fruit of their struggle manifest itself," said Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA).

"We are asking today, in this legislation, to recognize that the country of Ukraine has reached the point of integrating itself into the world economy."
"The vote by the House is a testament to the political and economic reforms that have taken hold in Ukraine over recent years," said Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Chairman E Clay Shaw, Jr (R-FL).

"It is tremendously important that the United States stand with those who move toward opening their markets. I applaud Ukraine for the progress it has made, which allows us to take this important vote."

Passage of H.R. 1053 follows the successful completion of a bilateral market access agreement between the United States and Ukraine. This was a major step forward in Ukraine`s effort to accede to the World Trade Organization.
