Over 3,000 South African textile workers who were on strike since the last four weeks over hiking wages, have ended the strike, following a resolution of the dispute.

Following intervention by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation & Arbitration (CCMA), members of the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU), have accepted the recommended settlement.

Under the settlement, workers have accepted a wage hike of 8.5%, backdated to July 1, 2014, against their demand of 8.75%.

SACTWU had demanded a wage increase of 8.75%, against which employers offered a hike of 7%. Following this, SACTWU conducted a ballot among its members on possibilities of going on a strike.

It will be a two year agreement, with a further 8.5% wage increase effective from 1 July 2015 and a full wage agreement is due to be signed between the parties later this week.
