The Research Associates also visited the Roanoke-Tar cotton gin in Everett, NC.

During the Research Associate Program, definitions of sustainability were discussed, along with the relationship between organic cotton and sustainable production of conventional cotton.

According to one definition, sustainable agriculture should satisfy human needs for food and fiber, enhance environmental quality, maximize the efficient use of non-renewable resources, sustain economic viability and enhance the quality of life.

These issues will be explored further during the 65th Plenary Meeting of the ICAC in Goiânia, Brazil during 11-15 September 2006.

The 2006 Research Associate Program provided an excellent overview of latest research into sustainable cotton production systems and an increased appreciation for the role of federal, state and private sector entities in enhancing the incomes of farmers and the competitiveness of the cotton industry.

The next ICAC Research Associate Program will be conducted during September 2007 in conjunction with the World Cotton Research Conference - 4 in Lubbock, Texas.

A specific announcement about the program with instructions on registration will be sent to member governments of the ICAC in October 2006.
