First home shopping channel of HCM City Cable Television Centre (HTVC) will be launched on Thursday, June 1, but garment and furniture suppliers are not ready to market their products on this channel as they feel that customers are more interested in cash transactions.

HTVC Director Le Duc Hung stated the idea for channel is to focus on fashion, cosmetics, furniture and consumer products.

However, Phan Van Kiet, Makreting Head of Viet Tien Garment and Textile Company, was hesitant on the success of the channel.

Giving reasons, he aired that Vietnamese buyers like to see, feel and try on the products, especially fashion products.

Buyers always like to move around shopping, finally to buy.

In the same tone, Duong Quoc Nam, Director of Hoang Nam Company – owner of the Pho Xinh furniture said that furniture products are expensive hence, people like to touch and feel material and see the colours physically to match interior decoration and space at home.

However, those working full time in offices have no time to go shopping and are excitd about this idea of sales channel.

But, they admit that a 'face to face' with products before paying bills is desired.

Even after Vietnamese Government's efforts to encourage e-commerce via Internet and the home channel, buyer traits are hard to change.

From bank's viewpoint, Le Dac Son, General Director of the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Private Enterprises (VP Bank) opined that popularity of e-commerce and shopping channels in west is due to easy credit card payment accomodating both, buyers and sellers.

But credit cards have met with partial success in Vietnam as people used their bankcards to withdraw money from the ATM, states Son.

Kiet predicted that consumer buying traits can be changed if Government limits small shops to popularize modern distribution through super markets, retail shopping centres and malls.
