Jute digs its way thru West Bengal

Jute industry is depending on the latest project that uses jute garb to construct roads in underdeveloped and rural areas, for its revival.

This project taken up by the West Bengal Government and started at Ghatal, Medinipur district, is expected to gross in crores of rupees.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) scheme the Jute Manufactures Development Council (JMDC) can hope to grab several orders worth Rs6000 crore.

Researchers have proved that using the non-conventional material, called jute geo-textile in technical terms, can save upto Rs72,000 per km while constructing rural roads.

This amazing discovery has interested the government and plans are being drafted for further projects after the successfully completing the debut project where bituminous jute cloth will be used on 4.8 km of the Natuk-Dingal road.

The other project in Bengal is located in Hooghly district.

The rural development ministry has agreed to provide Rs17.83 crore for two roads each in five states, namely Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Bengal.
