Increase in cotton cess to Rs20 from Rs11 per bale will going to harm local cotton industry, All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) stated.
This rise in cess is not showing any specific benefit to the industry and it is unreasonable, informed Chairman of APTMA Ahmed Kuli Khan Khattak.
In the meeting at APTMA, members strongly objected the way funds are being diverted towards paying salary than to research and development work.
Members also want Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) to refurbish its image bringing in advanced research equipments and by appointing young researchers.
PCCC should identify the needs and objectives of the cotton industry by following strategies of countries like China, Brazil and India.
At the meeting, members also demanded temporary suspension of cess till PCCC starts revising its work.
