The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association president, Fazlul Hoque said, only in April, knit T-shirts worth more than $50 million were exported to the US. 'Export of the item will increase by about 50 per cent at the year end.'
The Bangladeshi knitwear exporters, who traditionally produce cotton based items and concentrated in the EU markets, are expanding their base in the US market, especially in the post-MFA period.
In 2005, export of textile and apparel products to the US increased by about 20 per cent against the corresponding past year, according to import statistics of the US government.
According to reports of the US market analysts, unit price of Bangladeshi readymade garment increased by about 5 per cent during the period, even then the country remained one of the cheapest RMG suppliers to the US.
The price of Chinese products rose by 9.44 per cent to reach the unit price $3.09.
Bangladesh and Honduras are the cheapest suppliers with an average unit price of $2.12 and $2.14 respectively.
