An assurance was given by Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh to Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recently that Centre would set up the proposed Indian Institute of Handloom Technology at Bargarh in Orissa.
He highlighted that an annual mela would be organized in New Delhi for popularization and sale of handloom products at the national level.
Centre would help the State Government in the export of ginger, turmeric, cashew nut, onion, flowers and basmati rice produced locally and would depute experts to the State to conduct a survey to promote it, assured Ramesh.
He emphasized the need to focus on areas such as horticulture, handloom and handicraft, gems and jewelleries and herbal sector for promoting export by Utkal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI), which had organized a workshop.
Oriya entrepreneurs have excelled in other states and even abroad, and thus, the local skilled workforce can contribute to the growth of the State.
The non-metal sector requires instant attention both in terms of generating employment and increasing export.
