Raw cotton export value down in July 2005 – Jan 2006

Raw Cotton maintained its fourth position in its group during January, 2006 as in the previous month. Its exports in this month amounted to Rs. 408.43 million as against Rs. 456.92 million in December, 2005 and Rs. 1,038.83 million in January, 2005 showing a decrease of 10.61 percent over December, 2005 and 60.68 percent over January, 2005.

Exports of this item during July - January (2005 – 06) amounted to Rs. 2,389.89 million as against Rs. 4,777.73 million showing a decrease of 49.98 percent compared to the same period of last year. In terms of quantity 37,266 tonnes of raw cotton was exported during July - January (2005 – 06) as against 84,141 tonnes exported during the same period of last year showing a decrease of 55.73 percent.

The average unit price of cotton American was Rs. 63,477.75 per tonne during July -January (2005 – 06) as against Rs. 56,755.44 per tonne during the same period of last year showing an increase of 4.84 percent.

The main buyers of raw cotton during July - January (2005 – 06) were Bangladesh (Rs. 913.82 million), Indonesia (Rs. 617.19 million), China (Rs. 298.93 million), Ukraine (Rs. 117.31 million), Thailand (Rs. 98.52 million), Hong Kong (Rs. 94.27 million), India (Rs. 49.89 million), Vietnam (Rs. 21.57 million) and U.S.A. (Rs. 13.68 million). They together accounted for 93.11 percent of total exports of raw cotton during July - January (2005 – 06) as against their combined share of 82.70 percent during the corresponding period of last year.
