Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced Award ceremony to be held September 14 during Microenterprise Forum in Quito, Ecuador.

A Peruvian microfinance institution, two Colombian non-profit organizations and a social entrepreneur in Ecuador have won the Inter-American Development Bank's annual awards for microenterprise development in Latin America and the Caribbean, the IDB announced today.

The IDB prizes recognize the leadership, the innovations and extraordinary contributions of institutions and individuals who promote entrepreneurship among low-income people in this region. An award ceremony will be held on Thursday, September 14 in Quito, Ecuador during the 9th Inter-American Microenterprise Forum.

This year the forum will focus on access to new markets and better services for the poor. These are central issues for a new IDB initiative, Building Opportunity for the Majority, which promotes projects aimed at improving the living standards of the region's low-income majorities.

The IDB awards prizes for excellence in microfinance to a regulated institution (such as a bank, a credit union or a microfinance institution) and to a non-regulated institution (such as NGOs or foundations). Awards are also given to outstanding institutions involved in business development services for microentrepreneurs and to a social entrepreneur who combines sound business practices with a deep commitment to community development and poverty reduction. This year the jury gave special attention to efforts to support economically excluded groups.
