WTO Doha Round held off

American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition (AMTAC) Executive Director Auggie Tantillo commented on announcement of the suspension of the WTO's Doha Round trade talks in Geneva:

"Prior to the suspension of the WTO Doha Round negotiations, the non-agricultural market access (NAMA) talks were headed in the wrong direction. The fundamental flaw in the NAMA talks was that developing countries were asking for unfettered access to the U.S. market without granting full reciprocity in return.”

“For example, countries like India and Brazil were supporting unbalanced reductions in industrial tariffs that would hurt U.S. manufacturing. Other countries like China were opposing separate sectoral negotiations on textiles in an effort to monopolize global trade in that sensitive sector."

"Until and unless those countries move toward more equitable positions on tariff reductions and sectoral talks, it makes no sense to negotiate, since further talks only would be about one-sided concessions made by the United States."

American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition (AMTAC) is to preserve and create American manufacturing jobs through the establishment of trade policy and other measures necessary for the U.S. manufacturing sector to stabilize and grow.

Employment in the U.S. manufacturing sector provides millions of American jobs, enables a diverse workforce and sustains communities and families in both urban and rural America. Manufacturing contributes billions of dollars to the nations gross domestic product on an annual basis and is vital to the armed forces and overall national security of the United States.
