Textiles recorded 51.1 % escalation

In the second quarter of 2006, the value of domestic exports classified to the four major industries of textiles; wearing apparel; consumer electrical and electronic products; and machinery, equipment, apparatus, parts and components together accounted for 74 percent of Hong Kong's total domestic exports, according to statistics released today (August 10) by the Census and Statistics Department.

In the second quarter of 2006, the value of domestic exports classified to the wearing apparel industry increased substantially by $2.4 billion or 61.7 percent over a year earlier to $6.2 billion, that to the textiles industry by $3.0 billion or 51.1 percent to $8.7 billion, and that to the consumer electrical and electronic products industry by $1.7 billion or 45.3 percent to $5.3 billion.

On the other hand, in the second quarter of 2006, the value of domestic exports classified to the machinery, equipment, apparatus, parts and components industry, when compared with the same quarter in 2005, fell by $1.2 billion or 22.4 percent to $4.3 billion.

The above statistics of domestic exports classified by industrial origin are derived by re-grouping the merchandise domestic export items originally grouped under the external trade classification system according to the industries in which these merchandise items are normally produced. Transactions in gold and specie are not included.
