PSF & cotton yarn-cones prices up this week

The Wholesale Price Index for 'All Commodities' for the week ended 12th August 2006 rose by 0.2 percent to 204.7 (Provisional) from 204.3 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 4.92 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 12/08/2006 as compared to 4.82 percent (Provisional) for the previous week and 3.67 percent during the corresponding week of the previous year.

The index for this major group rose by 0.5 percent to 203.6 (Provisional) from 202.5 (Provisional) for the previous week. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 0.5 percent to 184.7 (Provisional) from 183.8 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of raw rubber (6 percent), niger seed (5 percent) and raw cotton and groundnut seed (1 percent each). However, the prices of raw silk (7 percent) and raw jute (5 percent) declined.

The index for 'Textiles' group rose by 0.4 percent to 131.1 (Provisional) from 130.6 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of polyster staple fibre (PSF) (3 percent) and cotton yarn-cones and hessian & sacking bags (1 percent each). However, the prices of texturised yarn and (1 percent) declined.

The index for 'Chemicals & Chemical Products' group declined by 0.1 percent to 195.4 (Provisional) from 195.5 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of liquid nitrogen (2 percent) and liquid chlorine and caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) (1 percent each). However, the prices of synthetic resins (9 percent) moved up.
