Textile and manufacturing business of the duty-free zones in Santo Domingo during 2005 lost at least 40,487 job posts in lieu of a decrease of 18.5 percent in contrast with 2004.

Yet, there was a 1.1 percent growth in exported value and 14 percent increase in foreign currency generation.

The decline was due to the dismantling of textile agreement by the World Trade Organization, allowing all textile garments to enter the US quota-free as of the January 1, 2005.

The year 2005 closed with a total of 556 operating firms, equivalent to a 2.3 percent decrease compared to 2004.
