The U.S. Census Bureau announced that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for September, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $366.2 billion, a decrease of 0.4 percent (±0.7 percent) from the previous month, but up 5.5 percent (±0.7 percent) from September 2005.
Total sales for the July through September 2006 period were up 5.6 percent (±0.5 percent) from the same period a year ago.
The July to August 2006 percent change was revised from +0.2 percent (± 0.7 percent) to +0.1 percent (± 0.3 percent).
Retail trade sales were down 0.6 percent (±0.7 percent) from August, but were 5.2 percent (±0.8 percent) above last year.
Nonstore retailers were up 12.9 percent (±4.6 percent) from September 2005 and sales of clothing and clothing accessories stores were up 10.7 percent (±1.5 percent) from last year.
