During 2001 - 2004, cotton consumption in Poland was between of 56 – 60 thousand tonnes. The last year – 2005 – began sharp decrease of cotton imports and consumption in Poland.
Data concerning the first half of 2006 show that the external circumstances will not change, and mainly, if the excessive imports of very cheap Chinese textiles and clothing is not stopped; cotton consumption in Poland will drop to the level of ca. 30 thousand tonnes.
Central Asian cottons still dominate over the Polish market. Cottons from other regions. Constitute only 16.43 percent of the fibre processed in Poland.
Last year, the greatest share on the Polish market (40.3 percent), was retained by Uzbek cotton, but once again its volume was lower, as in 2004 it was 47.7 percent, whereas in 1998 it was as high as 76.6 percent.
In 2005, Tajik and Kazakh cottons were being bought more and more frequently and retained their shares from 2004, ie.: 20 and 15 percent.
The share of varieties from West Africa has grown up to 10.5 percent whereas Greek and Brazilian fibres, in 2005, were imported in visibly smaller volumes.
