USDA Secretary Mike Johanns is going to visit India and he plans to urge top Indian officials to make concessions in world trade talks.
Mike is coming to India amidst dying hopes of restarting the Doha Round of world trade talks cancelled by WTO in a negotiating stalemate regarding subsidies and tariffs for agricultural trade in July.
Purpose of the visit is to convince India to participate in Doha and WTO negotiations and increase bilateral agreements with US.
July onwards, developing economies like India and Brazil have been complaining that rich nations including US are not decreasing grants for cotton, sugar and other products.
With a rise of more than 8 percent in local products last year, India has progressed in previous years. US wants India to reduce high levies and allow US companies to enter flourishing markets.
Mike will be meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and others. He will hold talks with representatives of US companies in India and agriculture tradesmen.
