The Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) is launching a training manual titled 'Competence and beyond' to standardize apparel industry education in Sri Lanka.
Country's apparel industry, is focusing on providing value-added, high-end clothing, is in a ferocious drive towards vertical integration, and technical expertise in order to meet demands beyond mere cut-cut-sew operations of the past.
According to Ashroff Omar a former Chairperson of the JAAF, "Formalizing needs of the industry via a manual of this nature will highlight the gaps in our current curricula and teaching methods".
There a few apparel-industry related training institutes in Sri Lanka and this is an effort to streamline and focus them towards the exact needs of the industry.
"This manual captures the standards defined in the industry, which would in turn enable education provider to align the curricula requirements in line with the specifications captured in this manual. It is my belief that this manual would prove to be an indispensable tool that would add the development of professionals who are in tune with global developments while meeting the requirements of the local industry," says Ajit Dias the Chairman JAAF.
As the fashion, industry is one with continuous change and evolution the joint apparel association believes the manual would synchronize all training with the international markets.
According to Mahesh Amalean the Chairman of the HRD sub-committee of JAAF, "this document will provide all the latest industry information so that current educational and training programs as well as future programs at the vocational, technical and tertiary level can be brought up to international standards in line with emerging trends of the industry".
