While explaining the usefulness of the index Prof. Dutta said “Such indices, though numbers, are useful because they trigger comparisons, people start asking questions and come up with new ideas for improvement”.

“India needs to become an innovation driven economy and therefore it is an appropriate time to have an India Innovation index. Traditionally the innovativeness of a society has been measured through success stories, however, now it is time to have a deeper measurement of innovation”, he added.

Prof. Soumtira Dutta has been instrumental in the development of the Global Innovation Index for the World Economic Forum and also for the Arab World. However, the model for various countries is different and therefore this index would be customized to India's needs, he added.

"Dr. Surinder Kapur, Chairman, Mission for Innovation in Manufacturing said that 'it would be essential to make the India Innovation Index a wholesome index which should also help us to focus on innovation for the Bottom of the Pyramid”.

Emphasizing the need for the India Innovation Index, Dr Kapur said that there was a pressing need to have a measure for innovation since none exist at present. Just as in the case of quality such measures were built over time similarly, we need to build measures for innovation, he added.

Lt. Gen Mehta, Director General, CII said that “we must make India Innovation Index into a wholesome index and not loose our focus. Thisindex must ultimately become the mother of all indices”.
