The Coir Board is a statutory body established under the Coir Industry Act 1953 for promoting the overall development of coir industry and for promotion of domestic as well as export market of coir and coir products.
Among the main functions of the Board are: • Promoting export of coir yarn and coir products. • Regulating the production of husk, coir yarn and coir products by registering coir spindles and looms for manufacturing coir products as also manufacturers of coir products, licensing exporters of coir, coir yarn and coir products. • Encouraging scientific, technological and economic research. • Marketing of coconut husks, fibre, yarn and coir products in India and elsewhere and preventing under unfair competition; and • Ensuring remunerative returns to producers of husks, coir fibre and coir yarn and manufacturers of coir products.
Constitution of the Board: The Coir Board consists of a full-time chairman and 39 members as provided in section 4 of the Coir Industries Act 1953 who represent all sections interested in the welfare of the coir industry.
An Executive Committee, five Standing Committees and an adhoc committee discharge the functions of the Board. The Board is running 43 establishments including 30 Coir Bhavans set up in various parts of India. There are a total number of 395 employees in the Board.
Research and Development: The Research and Development activities of the Coir Board are carried out through the twin Research Institutes of the Coir Board – Central Coir Research Institute, Alleppey in Kerala and the Central Institute of Coir Technology, Bangalore in Karnataka.
