The world's top textile scientists will be honored during AATCC's 2007 International Conference & Exhibition (IC&E) October 2-4 at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, S.C, U.S.A. The awards will be presented at the Association's conference Awards Luncheon on Thursday, October 2nd.

The program will feature the presentation of the Olney Medal for outstanding achievement in textile chemistry, the Harold C. Chapin Award for service to AATCC, the Henry E. Millson Award for Invention, and the J. William Weaver Paper of the Year Award.

Carl Brent Smith is this year's recipient of the OLNEY MEDAL for outstanding achievement in textile chemistry. A native of Raleigh, N.C, U.S.A, Smith earned his BS in chemistry from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 1966, and a PhD in chemical physics from the University of Florida in 1970. Smith is currently the Cone Mills Professor of Polymer and Color Chemistry at the NCSU College of Textiles.

He participated in the development of advanced dye process analysis and control through the NCSU Dye Applications Research Group. The research is now becoming reality for use in commercial textile dyeing operations.

He has also done major research in dyeing in supercritical carbon dioxide, ionic crosslinking of cellulose, and modification of reactive dyes to improve exhaustion and fixation.

Smith is the author of 109 published papers, three monographs translated into several languages, and four book chapters, and is the holder of five patents. He joined AATCC in 1971, and has been active in the Association's technical committees.

Established in 1944 in honor of Louis Atwell Olney, the founder and first president of AATCC, the Olney Medal recognizes outstanding achievement in textile or polymer chemistry or other fields of chemistry of major importance to textile science.

The award consists of a gold medal, a scroll, and an honorarium. Smith will deliver the traditional Olney Medal Address on Thursday, October 4 at 8:15 AM. His topic is “Dye Process Monitoring and Control—Past, Present, and Future."
