NIFT & ATDCs run various programmes for textile sector

The Minister of State for Textiles, Shri E.V.K.S. Elangovan, informed the Lok Sabha, in a written reply to a question by Shri Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy that the National Institute for Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the Apparel Training & Design Centres (ATDCs) are running various courses/programmes at various places in the country to meet the skilled manpower requirement of the textiles industry, especially apparel, in the field of design, merchandising and marketing.

The Minister further informed the House that the readymade garments is an important segment for augmenting production and export of textiles and clothing. It accounts for approximately 43% of the country's total textile exports.

During the year 2006-07, the readymade garment exports have amounted to US$ 8.08 billion, recording an increase of 1.12% over the exports during the corresponding year of 2005-06.
