With EXIM trade poised to touch over 700 billion dollars from the current figure of 270 Billion dollars, over the next three years there is a need to focus on container efficiencies to leverage this booming trade said Mr G K Pillai, Secretary Ministry of Commerce, Government of India at the CII Institute of Logistics Annual Conference on CENTRUM 2007: “Containerisation Building Trade Competitiveness.
Stating that this quantum leap in trade would bring additional stresses on infrastructure there was a need to bring in additional investments on supply chain infrastructure for containerization.
Quoting the success story of the airport privatization, Mr Pillai said that this would be a reflection of the Governments due importance for beefing up infrastructure in the country.
He said that the SEZ development was a success story that created national debate on the creation of policiesrelated to SEZ's. Currently the mutltiple models that were available for SEZ 's and this could only augur well for the development of trade competitiveness and employment generation.
He further mentioned that SEZ's have proven to be a huge success and has succeeded in creating inter ministerial cooperations.
Mr Pillai said that Hinterland connectivity would be the most critical area to ensure a seamless flow of containers and improved port productivity. It is an essential part of a world class logistics system that India needs to develop with a strategic focus.
