In India the labour laws state that a worker should be paid a minimum of Rs 95 per hour which comes to about 1.3 pounds. All Indian companies have implemented the 48 hour week and overtime is always voluntary.
Each state government has proper checks and balances to ensure that workers' rights are not violated and that offenders are punished.
Adds Agarwal, “The government should counter this kind of false propaganda as the Indian Apparel & Textile sector is critically important to the Indian economy contributing more than 30% of the net export earnings of the country."
"It is the single largest employer with an estimated work-force of more than 6 million. India's RMG (Ready Made Garments) exports contribute 3% of the total global clothing trade.”
We are already bogged down by the rising rupee and can definitely do without such unfair criticism, says a garment manufacturer.
