Weak infrastructure, major concern - Mr Roy

The greatest challenge with centres of excellence, said Prannoy Roy, Chairman, New Delhi Television (NDTV), India, is ensuring that they do not remain islands of excellence. How is it possible, he asked, to overcome those constraints that could hinder the growth of centres of excellence in India?

Daniel J. Brutto, President, UPS International, UPS, USA, referred to his own business, saying that the main constraint to moving goods freely around India, as well as in and out of India, is the lack of adequate infrastructure.

Stephen J. Rohleder, Chief Operating Officer, Accenture, USA, said centres of excellence are no longer confined to the US, Europe and Japan but are now an important feature of such emerging economic powers as India.

He listed the criteria he thought necessary to the creation of such centres: adequate human capital; good-quality infrastructure; stable public policy; good entrepreneurial spirit (not a problem in India, he added); and an ability to secure and sustain financial capital, which is the “lifeblood of expansion”.

Hector de J. Ruiz, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices), USA and Co-Chair of the India Economic Summit, said India's workforce is “up there with the best”.

He gave the example of Hyderabad, where stem-cell research and nanotechnology projects are being developed. In his opinion this is an excellent idea for a centre of excellence and demonstrates India's great potential.
