The Textile Association India (TAI), Mumbai Unit is organizing an exclusive seminar titled Organic Textiles: Farming to Finishing on January 18, 2008. The event will be held at hotel Leela Kempinski, Sahar, Andheri (East) Mumbai.

The TAI seminar will largely emphasize on organic textiles, banned and restricted substances in processing. Besides, it will also cover issues on Buyer Restricted Substances Lists (RSLs), GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) and will give participants the opportunity to interact with experts in the respective fields. The seminar will allow an open house panel discussion where your queries will be answered by a panel of experts.

The following topics wil be covered
• Why Organic Cotton?
• Organic Cotton Farming
• Current Ecological Requirements
• Perspective of Organic Textiles
• Restricted Substance List
• Certification in Organic Cotton
• Specifiers' Perspective of Organic Textiles
• Dyestuff/Chemical Manufacturers

The seminar has laid immense stress on cotton firstly because 25 percent of the world's pesticides and fertilizers are used for cotton, while only 3 percent of the world's farmland grows cotton. Secondly, over 750 grams of toxic chemicals are used to grow cotton enough for one bed linen set and about 500 gm used for cotton enough for one T-Shirt and surprisingly most chemicals used in cotton farming were originally developed for warfare

Today, most retailers in Europe and some from the US are very bullish on organic textiles. Organic merchandise has caught the fancy of the new-age consumer, who is increasingly seeing crumbling environmental edifices, significant climate change, global warming, political posturing and so on. The Textile industry is also witnessing similar interest and retailers are looking to source more and more organic textiles.

The demand for organic cotton fibre is expected to grow from 40,000 metric tons in 2006 to 100,000 metric tons in 2008. Estimated global retail sales of organic textiles are projected to show a 116 % growth rate in the short term. India is placed brilliantly in this mini-revolution. We are considered to be one of the two largest organic cotton producing countries (Turkey being the other).

The seminar also welcomes voluntary participation by means of advertisements, delegates and sponsorship which would provide a common platform to meet the experts from industry as well as the exchange of views on the technological developments in the field of processing.
