The $400 billion in global trade of textile and clothing products are of vital interest to both developing countries and LDC's. In 2003, data from the United Nations COMTRADE database shows textile and clothing products accounted for 10 percent or more of imports by the World from each of 82 individual exporting countries, overseas territories, and dependencies from around the globe. Nearly 80 of those exporters were either developing countries or LDC's.

The Global Alliance for Fair Textile Trade (GAFTT) is an alliance of textile and apparel groups from around the world that are fighting for the principles of fair trade and free markets. These groups have united under the Brussels Communiques, the successor to the "Istanbul Declaration," in order to draw attention to looming take-over of the world?s textile and apparel trade by a few large exporters who refuse to play fairly.
