With plans to sell 2 million kg wool in the next 2 - 3 years, American woolen industry is keen to take advantage of growing textile market in India.
USA sees huge potential in India to strengthen its presence and therefore directs its resources towards Indian market, informs Barry Savage, American Sheep Industry (ASI) International Marketing Consultant.
The year-on-year wool consumption in India recorded 130 million kg of which, 20 and 50 million kg was imported from Australia and New Zealand respectively, informed ASI officials.
ASI is aware of the influence of Australian and New Zealand wool in India but is optimistic of selling 2 million kg in Indian market, Savage added.
Though ASI represents 67,000 woolgrowers in USA, it will be selling its wool products at 10 percent cheaper rates than other foreign wool exporters, and the exporters do not see it as a major medium in acquiring the market.
Currently, US wool exporters are looking at markets in Punjab and other western parts of the India.
Since Ludhiana and Amritsar are famous across the world for their knitwear, blankets and shawls, ASI would focus on these two centres.
Discussion is also being held with big manufacturers of knitwear and fabric in other parts of the country, informed S B Hardas, Indian representative of ASI.
