In order to reduce dependence on the traditional overseas markets and promote and explore new South and Latin American markets, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) of India is opening a warehouse in Uruguay.

The warehouse which will be taken on lease by EPCH will reduce the lead time in undertaking deliveries as ready stock will be kept by Indian handicraft exporters, said Raj Malhotra, Chairman of EPCH.

He said, “The warehouse would help exporters improve accessibility to 24 Latin American countries and since exports to these countries are low, the facility will help in growing exports to the region”.

Exports from the handicraft sector, which employ's one of the highest numbers of people in India came under severe strain in the aftermath of the economic crisis. Exports in 2008-09 dipped to US $1.79 billion, down 48 percent.
