COSATU, with around two million members, has pledged to go ahead with its countrywide strike in two week's time in order to put an end to the practice of using labor brokers.

Zelinzima Vavi – the General Secretary of COSATU, while addressing the national congress of Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU), revealed that the union federation will opt for a demonstration on 7th October in order to boost up the drive for putting an end to the use of labor brokers, casualization and over exploitation of laborers.

He further added that, government's warning to initiate a wage subsidy to encourage the factory owners, to engage young laborers, will lead to the formation of another segment of super-super exploited laborers.

According to him, the over-exploitation and repression of laborers was already prevalent and rising in the twin-level labor system of South African market.

He said that, workers under the joint bargaining system are comparatively in a better position. They have higher job security, better wages as well as better working atmosphere. They are usually secured under the labor laws of the country.

He also revealed that, in almost all the sectors of the economy, there is a second category of laborers, who are not secured under the labor laws and who face the cruelty of their employers. These employers blatantly break the labor laws, bargaining contracts, and health and safety laws without facing any negative consequence.
