Martin Oppenheimer, the former Vice Chairman and a grazier from Walcha, in New South Wales, was appointed new leader of the rebel wool group, Australian Wool Growers (AWGA).

He will replace outgoing Chick Olssen, who completed his term.

Earlier this year, AWGA signed a deal with animal rights group PETA, to end PETA's campaign to boycott Australian wool.

Oppenheimer said marketing and promotion of wool will be the group's first priority.

He also added that AWGA will maintain pressure on the peak group, Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) for better promotion of wool.
