Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association (ABIT) announced that they participate in a Business Pact for Integrity and against Corruption.

On December 9, the international day for the fight against corruption, entity representatives from several segments of Brazilian society launched the public consultation of the “Business Pact for Integrity and the Fight against Corruption” at the São Paulo Stock Exchange.

It was a pioneer effort articulated by the Ethos Institute with some UN entities in Brazil (Brazilian Global Pact Committee, the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Office against Drugs and Crime) and with Patri (Government Relations and Public Policies), where the entities and member companies agree to adopt the procedures explained therein at all their levels of relationship: internal, with the public jurisdictions and with the market.

ABIT supports the movement. Association President, Josué Gomes da Silva stated that they join this initiative with utmost zeal. They are completely engaged in this pact.

The content of the Pact is the result of two seminars that counted on the participation of dozens of companies. The references on which the participants based themselves to elaborate the document included the Ethos Institute Letter of Principles, the OCDE guidelines for transnationals, the 10th UN Global Pact and Convention against Corruption.

The initiative is supported by ABIT and dozens of other institutions, which have already created a Mobilization Committee to disclose and mobilize companies. The text is available for suggestions and modifications until March 13, 2006. There will then be a period for joining.

ABIT stimulates the evolution of the sector coordinating relevant initiatives in the social and environmental areas, besides sponsoring the sustainable growth of the Brazilian textile industry.
