Leading maternity apparel retailer Mothers Work Inc has announced that comparable store sales for January 2006 increased approximately 3.9 percent.
Due to the extremely large initial shipments to Kohl's in January 2005 to provide opening inventory for the launch of the Oh Baby! by Motherhood licensed arrangement with Kohl's, preliminary net sales for the month of January 2006 decreased approximately 2.7 percent to $42.2 million from $43.4 million reported for the month of January 2005.
The sales decrease from this licensed arrangement compared to last year's launch was partially offset by increased sales from the expansion of the company's proprietary Two Hearts Maternity collection to an additional 497 Sears locations during late March 2005, and an increase in comparable store sales.
Comparable store sales for January 2006 increased approximately 3.9 percent versus a comparable store sales decrease of 3.7 percent for the January 2005 period.
During January 2006, the company opened one store, its ninth Destination Maternity superstore, and closed 13 stores, including 7 related to multi-brand store openings.
The company ended the month with 839 stores and 1,579 total retail locations compared to 874 stores and 1,105 total retail locations at the end of January 2005. The significant increase in the company's total retail location count compared to a year ago resulted predominantly from the expansion of the company's proprietary Two Hearts Maternity collection during late March 2005.
