SABIC Netherlands' production hit by worker's strike

Production of Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) Europe Chemicals’ Netherlands based Geleen plant is suffering due to ongoing strike of workers over issues related to work conditions, a company statement said.

SABIC operates two naphtha crackers and a number of polymerization plants at Geleen, which facilitates production of 1.25 million tons of ethylene, 940,000 tons of polyethylene, 725,000 tons of propylene and 620,000 tons of polypropylene per annum.

According to the statement, the production started plummeting since January 31 this year as workers’ unions took to strike to protest against non-finalization of an agreement concerning work conditions.

The company has yet not been able to successfully negotiate the issues with workers’ unions, and it also has not been able to draw a real picture of the impact that the strike would have on the production and profits, the statement added.

At present, it is not possible for the company to assess how far the financials and production would be hit by the strike, the statement said.

De Unie, a union engaged in the strike, said SABIC wants to sharply cut the support it extends to laid-off workers in finding new jobs.
