The Bon-Ton Stores Inc has reported that total and comparable store sales for the four weeks ended January 28, 2006 increased 0.9 percent to $62.8 million compared to $62.3 million for the same period last year.

For the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005, total and same-store sales increased 0.3 percent to $464.6 million compared to $463.3 million for the same period last year.

Year-to-date total sales decreased 1.8 percent to $1,287.2 million compared to $1,310.4 million for the same period last year. Same-store sales decreased 1.6 percent.

James Baireuther, Vice Chairman and Chief Administrative Officer, said, "We are pleased that our positive fourth quarter sales trend extended into January. Best performing areas were Home, Shoes, Intimate Apparel, and Missy Sportswear. Even though January weather was unseasonably warm, we are comfortable with our overall assortment and fall/holiday remaining inventory.”

“We are well positioned to receive spring goods and our inventory is balanced to the trending businesses," James added.

The Bon-Ton Stores Inc operates 135 department stores and two furniture stores in 16 states from the Northeast to the Midwest under the Bon-Ton and Elder-Beerman names.

The stores carry a broad assortment of quality brand-name fashion apparel and accessories for women, men and children, as well as distinctive home furnishings.
